I bet this is not is not a question we ask ourselves very often. I mean, our default answers might just be to say, “I am Imani Sonya Maxwell”. Well, that’s not exactly a genius response but it certainly is not dumb either. However, have we ever really spent some time to introspect and ask ourselves, “Who am I?” As in, who is Imani Sonya Maxwell…ummm…NowI see why some people are often intimidated by the most common interview question/ or command; “Tell me about yourself.”
What makes you, you? What defines you as a person? What are your most valued attributes? What do you think is your greatest weakness? What are your strengths? To you, what is your greatest accomplishment in life? Who is your role model? Why are they your role model(s)? What are your goals in life? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? When do you intend to retire? Where? What is one thing you have always wanted to do and why? What do you want to become in life? Umm…I don’t like that question, it implies that I must ascribe to be something that has already been defined, a box, it implies that I must aim to be like someone else. Me? I would ask “Who do you want to become? My response, “I want to be the best version of myself, I want to always approach life like a child does, blissfully naiive, I want to as kind as my mom, as hardworking as my aunt Donnette, as determined as my aunt Tathlyn, as hopeful and sweet as my baby brother Jahval, as helpful as my little sister Kimone, as patient as my friend Judy, as understanding as Neckeasha, as caring as Alafia, I want to be as flexible as Sabrina, to be as protective and stubborn as my brother Kimani, I want to be as smart as my brother Adeka, I want to be as motivating as my dad, I want to be as loving as my Uncle Carl, as faithful as my uncle Winston, I want to be as private as my cousin Careen, as brave as my cousin Ian, I want to be as unapologetticaly me as my mentor Meila, as spiritual as my mentor Raj, as awesome and funny as my Pyjama Buddy Ash! 😂😄
Who are you?
Perhaps your response will clue me into who I am.
